What Can You Uncover in a 6 Second Resume Scan
What Can You Uncover in a 6 Second Resume Scan What Can You Uncover in a 6 Second Resume Scan Of course, there are many recruiters out there who have the luxury of having 4 or 5 minutes to assess a resume, but many others will be time pressurized and overwhelmed with applicants, many of which they know will not be a match for the job. Many rely on this superficial firstround speed sift to eliminate time wasters and quickly ring-fence promising applicants.Of course, the truth is that there will be a lot of collateral damage from using this 6 second scan, (meaning talent may be lost in the first round), but it is an unavoidable reality for many, and recruiters simply have to make do. So, what useful information can be uncovered in a superficial 6 second scan that jettisons ill fitting applicants and leaves fruchtwein of the quality intact? I have outlined a few belowThere are several signs of job advert spamming that I think can be spotted in a split second by scanning your email inb ox, and the most surefire sign of that for me is an application submitted within hours of the job being posted and one that doesnt contain a cover letter, especially if asked for. Its very likely that this is a spam application where the applicant has probably not looked much beyond the job description when applying for the role. There is a small chance of fit, and this resume may be safely passed over.If you are really focused on attention to detail, thoroughness and rule following, include specific application instructions in the job description, such as they must start the email, subject header with a particular code word. If they fail to follow these criteria, youd have to be concerned whether they were the right fit. These two types of inbox screening can help you sift a large proportion of time wasters within 2 or 3 seconds, probably allowing you a little extra time to scan the resume. So, what can you uncover within the resume itself? Resumes that are well structured, with clea rly delineated sections, and which make appropriate use of bold headings and indents, short sentences and bullet points indicate that the candidate understands the importance of presentation and that they may have a more organized mind. (Even if it was prepared by a resume writer, it at least shows they understand the importance of presentation and readability and that they know their own limitations). A cluttered or less clear resume, which can be judged in a 2-second glance is most likely a no fit. While the summary section is important, TheLadders study showed that recruiters focus in on current and previous job title/lage and employment dates during the crucial 6 seconds. So, if job titles dont match your position on offer and dates are a little wonky, the candidate is clearly a weaker match and ready for your maybe or reject pile.As well as relevancy, youll be looking for signs of dynamism and effectiveness, which could be concise sentences starting with actions words like, creat ed, improved, increased, and with numbers, dollar values or percentages associated. You may also spot typos, (although you might not come across one in a 6 second scan) but they can be an indication of carelessness, not using a spell-checker, being a bad speller etc., and if you have a zero-tolerance policy of spelling and grammar, this is also a great second scan criterion. So, as you can see, it is possible (although not advised) for recruiters to make a superficial but partially meaningful assessment of resumes within 6 seconds.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. Returnship- Re-Entering the Workforce
Returnship- Re-Entering the WorkforceReturnship- Re-Entering the WorkforceReturning to work after taking time off to care for young children or ill family members can be a challenge. Things may have changed in your field during your time away from the workplace. If you neglected to keep your skills and knowledge current, it might be difficult to find a job now that you are ready to restart your career. Many employers are reluctant to hire applicants whose resumes show lengthy employment gaps even when you can easily explain them. A returnship can provide a solution to these problems. Returnship Returnships are adult internships that are specifically geared toward experienced professionals who are re-entering the workforce after an extended absence. Participants typically include parents who have taken a career break for caregiving, but retired military or those who have been out of work because of a temporary illness should also consider these programs. Most returnships are short -term, typically lasting for a finite amount of time ranging from 10 to 16 weeks. Most pay a salary or stipend. They are available in a variety of occupations including, but not limited to, engineering, marketing, finance, law, sales, and technology. Participants in a returnship can expect to work regular hours doing work similar to what they would have been doing at the saatkorn point in their career had they not taken a hiatus. iRelaunch, a company that specializes in career re-entry, reports they have identified over 80 companies around the world with paid returnships. This estimate only includes formal programs. Returnees to the workforce can make informal arrangements as well. How Doing One Can Benefit You During your career break, you may not have given much thought to your career. After all, you were busy tending to other things, which is why you took time off in the first place. During your hiatus, there may have been significant changes in your line of work. Technology i s continually evolving and, even if your occupation isnt tech-based, these changes are likely to have had a significant impact on it. Additionally, your old skills may have become a bit rusty from lack of use. Doing a returnship will allow you to identify the skills that are currently essential to the career you are trying to re-enter. Some may be transferable skills acquired through prior experience and others may be entirely new. This experience presents an opportunity to sharpen your old skills and learn new ones. According to reporter Rebecca Jarvis in a story about returnships on Good Morning America, if you couple acquiring those hard skills with soft skills such as communication skills, you will be an in-demand job candidate (Jarvis, Rebecca. How a Returnship Can Boost Your Career (video). Good Morning America. August 14, 2018). A returnship can also open the door to permanent employment, according to Jarvis. Participants have a 50 to 100 percent chance of getting hired full -time once their returnship ends. To increase your chances, she suggests going above and beyond while you are there. Returnships also serve another purpose, as do regular internships done by college students or recent graduates. They can help you define- or redefine- your goals. You can decide what trajectory your career should take, or perhaps even choose a different path if this one is no longer appealing. How to Find a Returnship Path Forward, a non-profit organization that helps companies create and run internships for individuals who have taken time off to be caregivers and are re-entering the workforce, lists returnships on its website. They work with employersin San Francisco, Colorado, LA, and New York, and New Jersey.Programs are 16 weeks long.Participants must have taken at least 2 years off from work to be a caregiver andhave at least five years of professional experience. The organizations list of 32 partnering employersincludes Walmart, Verizon, NBC Universal, Oracl e Data Cloud,Cloudier, Intuit, Udemy, and Campbells. iRelaunch, in addition to offering for-fee services for individuals who need help relaunching their careers, also provides a free listing of returnships on the companys website. These opportunities are in a variety of fields like STEM, education, legal, medical, and non-profit. You can also use job search websites such as Indeed.comand LinkedIn to search for opportunities.Jarvis, in her report on Good Morning America, advised those seeking workplace reentry to ask employers if they offer returnships since many do. Networking is also essential when it comes to looking for these opportunities. If you did not keep your network alive during your career break, this is a good time to reactivate it.

7 Reasons You Werent Hired
7 Reasons You Werent Hired7 Reasons You Werent Hired Your resume perfectly fits the job description, youve been hearing positive feedback from HR, and what? You werent hired? Dont take it personally there are a whole slew of reasons outside your control (and sometimes in your control) why you may have been passed up for the job you wanted. Often, the reason you werent hired is only distantly correlated to your strength and fit for the position. Here are 7reasons why you may not have gotten the jobRecruiters say that over half of job applicants for a given job arent qualified and sometimes even more. Dont be surprised when you dont hear back if you only met 50 percent of the qualifications. But on the other hand, myopically applying for only the jobs you are fully qualified you for can limit your options. Applying for a job that asks for 6 years of experience when you only have 4 isnt overly idealistic. Go for It.Sometimes HR will post jobs zugnglich even though the company is going through internal turmoil, and actually hasnt hired anyone in a year. A hiring freeze could also take effect when youre in the interview process, in which case you could unceremoniously be dropped out of the running. This might also be something HR doesnt want you to know, because they dont want news to spread about why the freeze had to happen.Internal candidates generally have first dibs on a role than a new hire coming into the company. In fact, sometimes an internal candidate welches the only one being considered all along, but the company has a policy about publically posting jobs. The job could have only had the illusion of being open, but was actually reserved for someone else from the start. Again, dont get down on yourself.Even if your resume perfectly fit the qualifications and your cover letter was stellar, theres no guarantee youll land the job. It depends on where youre interviewing, but many workplaces are increasingly concerned with building a cohesive company culture. Research company culture on Glassdoor beforehand so you have a better idea of what theyre looking for. When HR is looking at a talented pool of applicants, even one misstep can be reasonenough to cost you the gig. No matter how talented you are, its always important to be courteous, professional and kind to the people who are hiring you.If a hiring manager is looking for someone to do a specific job that you seem over-qualified for, they might take the less-qualified applicant for budget reasons or because the role was more junior than your qualifications. Hopefully, you will quickly be rewarded for your skills elsewhereHiring can be put on hold during a major restructuring, during which HR will be reevaluating their priorities for what kind of job positions they need. If youre still really excited about the company, dont give up hope let HR know that youre interested in any future positions that might come up.Whatever the reason, not landing a particular job sho uldnt prevent you from continuing to search. There are plenty of ways to address each of the previously mentioned reasons why you may not have landed the job. Review your resume, tap your network, get a referral and get back out there. The job search may not be easy, but scoring a job you love is well worth the wait.Editors Note The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author. Are you an employer? The advantages of online study
The advantages of zugreifbar study The advantages of online studyPosted March 18, 2013, by Jo MesserIn todays education market, an astounding 80 per cent of students around the world are engaged in online learning. In Australia, online study is at the forefront in the education sector, with many universities and TAFEs expanding their online course offeringsas a result of the dramatic rise in demand and predicted exponential growth.Various studies have shown that distance learning programs are just as efficient and as valuable as regular classroom programs, and sometimes even better. A study examining the effectiveness of web-based versus face-to-face delivery of education found that participants were more attracted to online education because of its greater flexibility and offering of work/life balance. It also promoted a learner-centred approach and enabled students to overcome potential obstacles to engaging in education. So what are the benefits of studying online?AccessibilityOnli ne learning is available to everyone and overcomes barriers or restrictions that can limit engagement, providing the flexibility to accommodate your specific individual needs. Students with mobility limitations, experiencing an illness or who have a medical condition, and those who live in rural areas or who dont have access to transport, can work at their own pace from wherever they want. You no longer have to be on campus to get an education.FlexibilityYou get to choose how and when you want to study You can study in the luxury of your own home, or anywhere else that takes your fancy.Save moneyOnline courses are almost always cheaper than their on-campus counterparts. Not only do you save money on study costs, you also save on other related costs such as parking, public transport, petrol and, for some people, childcare.Maximise your timeDo you want to spend hours stuck in besucherzahlen or on public transport? Online study enables you to save a lot of time and energy. Youre notlag e restricted to a rigid timetable and dont have to waste valuable time waiting around for classes time that could be better used to study, work or see family and friends.Lots of course optionsOnline study enables you to choose from a broad range of courses, not just the local offerings. You can evaluate a multitude of coursesand decide which one you like the best.Study at your own paceSome people pick things up quickly and can power through course material, while others need more time to digest and review. With online study you have 24/7 access to study materials and can choose the speed and intensity that is right for you.Work when you wantAs a distance education student you dont have to worry about your work hours and taking time off to attend classes. Research demonstrates that students who are working and studying benefit from being able to apply their learning to their work and vice versa. Graduate Destinations 2011 reported that graduates who studied mainly by distance had be tter full-time employment outcomes than those who studied on campus, presumably because many of the external students were able to work and gain valuable experience while they studied.Student supportAt the click of a button you can ask a lecturer a question, submit an assignment or even engage with other students. No more playing phone tag or waiting outside lecturers officesNetworking opportunitiesOnline study enables you to broaden your professional network. Rather than just meeting local students, you will be able to connect to a diverse range of people who can offer their advice and support. What do hiring managers say?The most frequent question from potential students is whether or not hiring managers place the same value on distance learning. We spoke to Andrew Ryan, a Senior Human Resources Manager who has worked in banking, professional services and utilities organisations. When recruiting applicants, I look at everything on balance based on the position we are recruiting wh at do their results look like? Is a degree or diploma needed for the job? What experience do they have? There are many quality distance learning programs run by leading institutions and I value that candidates have taken the initiative to undertake education, online or campus based.A student experiencePenny, a mother of three who worked in a senior management role, decided to finally explore her passion for interior decorating. Having three boys under the age of 7 made it impossible to attend classes so she did her research and found numerous online course offerings available. The course Penny chose provided flexibility and an opportunity to see if she wanted to change her career path from the allied health sector into interior design. I loved the course Having trained originally as a physiotherapist and then moving into management, it gave me the opportunity to see if I really wanted to make the move into a more creative role. She has recently established her own interior decoratin g business after starting with doing the bedrooms of her friends children.
